撒马尔罕是中亚地区的历史名城，也是伊斯兰学术中心，现在是乌兹别克斯坦的旧都兼第二大城市、撒马尔罕州的首府，首任总统伊斯拉木·卡里莫夫生于此城。“撒马尔罕”一词在粟特语中意为“石城”或“石要塞”、“石堡垒”；另根据耶律楚材说：“寻思干者西人云肥也，以地土肥饶故名之。” 十四世纪时为帖木儿帝国国都，这里也是帖木儿陵墓的遗址古尔-埃米尔陵所在地。Bibi-Khanym清真寺也是著名地标之一，雷吉斯坦广场则是市区古老的中心。2001年，联合国教育、科学及文化组织将拥有2750年历史的撒马尔罕编入世界遗产之列，称为“文化交汇之地”。
