When we visited the "vessel" in mid November we did not pre book and as you will note from my review I do not carry a mobile cellphone so instead of obtaining a ticket from the distribution post along side the "vessel" was taken by a security chap to the fourth floor desk where I was given two tickets. I did not have to wait and in answer to another question yes there is an elevator but it takes just six people and only goes once evry fifteen minutes so if there is a queue there may be a long waiting time. I suggest walking up if possible.

Otherwise, it can be hit or miss as to how crowded it is and whether you'll be able to get free tickets if you show up and use the kiosks at the Vessel. (The "Flexipass" is the one that costs $10, so if you are looking for free viewing--and no reason not to--then don't choose the Flexipass.)

You can reserve tickets for a time in advance but you have to do at least 2 weeks in advance. When we went 2 weeks ago, we got there around 3:30 in the afternoon on a Monday and used the kiosk. It shows the available times to enter. We had to wait until 5 so we visited the nearby mall and had drinks until then. Worth the wait. There seemed to be plenty of people milling around waiting for their time to arrive.
