太原市，简称并，古称晋阳，别称并州、龙城，是中华人民共和国山西省省会，位于山西省中部、晋中盆地北部地区。市境东北接阳泉市，东南邻晋中市，西连吕梁市，北接忻州市。地处太原盆地北部，三面环山，东为太行山，西为吕梁山，北为系舟山、云中山。汾河自西北入境，贯穿城区并于南部出境。市人民政府驻杏花岭区新建路69号。 太原是华北地区重要的中心城市，全国重要的新材料和先进制造业基地，山西省的政治、经济、文化和国际交流中心，同时是山西经济金融的决策和管理中心，太原都市圈核心区域。
