A woman on a walk in the Puketi Omahuta forest in Northland found a kiwi dead inside of a Department of Conservation pest trap.
DOC is considering revising trap standards after the bird's bill was caught and it was killed.
Bauer-Hunt said it was likely that it was an adult brown kiwi, which has a “non-threatened” status, dependent on continuing conservation efforts. The sex of the kiwi is unknown at this stage.
