The University was named after the leader of the Australian federation movement and the nation's second Prime Minister, Alfred Deakin. Monash University is a commissioned Victorian university.

Alfred Deakin served as the second Prime Minister of Australia, in office for three separate terms. Before entering office, he was a leader of the movement for Australian federation.
