BACKGROUND: To date, periorbital melanosis is an ill-defined entity. The condition has been stated to be darkening of the skin around the eyes, dark circles, infraorbital darkening and so on.

Hyper-pigmentation under the eyes is especially common in darker skin tones, especially as they age, which can lead to what’s known as periorbital melanosis (excessive under-eye pigmentation).
