Some species of baleen whales may avoid attracting killer whales by singing too low to be heardMore solitary than toothed whales, baleen whales face predatory attacks from killer whales, especially mother and calf pairs. When attacked, some species fight back, while others choose flight.
The decision comes after ministers of the environment and fisheries carried out a November 2024 risk assessment that found the whales face “imminent threats” to their survival and recovery.
