The Brijuni Islands are known for long standing activity of Josip Broz Tito, the president of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

In 1945 after World War II the Brijuni became part of Yugoslavia and President Marshal Josip Broz Tito made the Brijuni Islands his personal State Summer Residence. Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik designed a pavilion for Tito.

Na Brijunima je Tito primio više od dvjesto pedeset državnih i parlamentarnih, partijskih, sindikalnih, vojnih, znanstveno-tehničkih i drugih stranih delegacija i dvostruko više delegacija s područja bivše Jugoslavije. Razgovarao je s više od 300 šefova domaćih diplomatskih misija i ambasadora akreditiranih na području bivše Jugoslavije.

The Brijuni archipelago lies off Istria’s west coast, a 15-minute boat journey from Fažana, just north of Pula. Most of the 14 islands are off-limits to the public.

Koki (hatched c. 1960) is a yellow-crested cockatoo that was owned by Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito and kept at his coastal retreat on the Brijuni islands, in western Croatia. From 1949 until his death in 1980, the Brijuni islands served as Tito's official summer residence.

Almost every visitor to the National Park wishes to take a ride in Tito’s Cadillac, which arrived in Brijuni as early as 1953 as a gift to the former president of Yugoslavia from Croatian immigrants in Canada.
