2009年8月24日 · I just inspected a 90 year old 4 family brick building and found that its out of plumb 3 inches over 37 feet. The basement walls are 12 inch brick and the the other 3 floors are 8 inch brick. I am thinking of adding a new wythe to make it all 12 inch brick. I am also planning to underpin the old footing with a new wider new one.

When I have cross-sectioned and examined old brick microscopically, I've found that it often has a strong shell layer and a weak interior, most due to poor firing techniques of old. That leads to crumbly brick and high water intrusion.

2005年8月25日 · I am working on a renovation/restoration project. the building is 80 years old with clay brick/clay tile parapets that are damaged and need to be repaired/replaced. Most of the damage is on the back side of the parapets at the roof flashing level. The parapets are approximately 6 ft tall above the roof deck and lean outward.

2023年4月28日 · The approach we take in NYC is that old brick buildings don't need to be reinforced. As soon as you remove any of the lateral system or add more than 10% seismic/wind force to it (like an extension), you need to design the entire building in that orthogonal direction (non-orthogonal in some cases) per latest codes.

2005年8月24日 · MotorCity - I always thought there was a fire safety element to it as well. If there's a fire and the backup wall goes, we don't a 50' panel of brick falling away from the building as a giant sheet. That and just general decay of brick ties. Most buildings (houses, anyway) over 30 years old just don't have them anymore.
