Western Desert The Western Desert is part of the Sahara Desert and occupies all of Egypt west of the fertile strip of the Nile to the border with Libya. It is utterly barren, except for five oases, described here.

In Egypt, the Western Desert is an area of the Sahara that lies west of the river Nile, up to the Libyan border, and south from the Mediterranean Sea to the border with Sudan. It is named in contrast to the Eastern Desert which extends east from the Nile to the Red Sea.

The Western Desert covers about 700,000 square kilometers (equivalent in size to Texas) and accounts for about two-thirds of Egypt's land area. This immense desert to the west of the Nile spans the area from the Mediterranean Sea south to the Sudanese border.

From north to south, the desert stretches from the narrow coastal plains of the Mediterranean to the borders of Egypt with Sudan. The area covered by the desert is 680 650 square meters. The height of the Western Desert is highest in the southeast of the Al Jilf Al Kabir Plateau (3,300 feet).

The Western Desert occupies an area of 700,000 km2 and hides dunes, gorges, oases and incredible natural sculptures the color of snow in its most surprising portion. Refuge for the caravans that supplied the Nile Valley, half a dozen oases, which mirage, can be linked through the immensity of the Western Desert of Egypt.

The Western Desert, which covers 681,000 square kilometers (over two-thirds of Egypt's total area), is merely one part of the Sahara belt across northern Africa.
