Fabricating a structure from plated raw materials may damage the plating layer and reduce the corrosion resistance (e.g. assembly using bolts and screws, bending plated sheet metal, etc). Welding plated steel requires special precautions to make good quality joints and to protect the operator from fumes containing zinc compounds.

Since the project is outdoors, a corrosion protection coating is required. The only coatings that can be used are Zinc/Aluminum coatings such as ASTM F 1136 Grade 3. There is a history of aluminum not being used in contact with concrete because of corrosion concerns. This seems to be specifically with solid aluminum.

Stainless steel comes in several qualities. AISI 303 (1.4305) (Stainless Steel A1) approximately 304 but more machinable due to sulfur. AISI 304 (1.4301) (Stainless Steel A2) comprises of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. AISI 316 (EN 1.4401) (Stainless Steel A4) is 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum.

Because of this stainless steel cannot be plated to ordinary steel by chemical means either. Stainless steel can be welded to ordinary steel but a TIG welder is required, but this wouldn't suit your purposes.

The galvanized or zinc layer is there to provide extra time when the top layers fail. These types of systems typically use contrasting colors for each coating layer. This way any reduction of protection due to a missing layer is readily visible. Together this system can protect the steel structure for up to 50 years.
