The 1960s represented a pivotal inflection point that gave birth to minicomputers and laid the groundwork for the microcomputer revolution that followed in the 1970s and 80s.

By 1960 transistorized computers were replacing vacuum tube computers, offering lower cost, higher speeds, and reduced power consumption. The marketplace was dominated by IBM and the seven dwarfs: RCA. Some examples of 1960s second generation computers from those vendors are: the RCA 301, 3301, 501, and the Spectra 70 series.

An early transistorized computer, the NEAC (Nippon Electric Automatic Computer) includes a CPU, console, paper tape reader and punch, printer and magnetic tape units.
