Weed-rich tailwaters typically produce 3-5 broods of midges per calendar year, which means tailwater junkies have to imitate the various stages of their development (larvae, pupae, and adults) on a non-stop basis.

Today, we’ll take a look at fifteen of my favorite midge patterns, the sizes and colors I recommend, as well as why you want them in your box every day of the year. I’m not sure you can have a complete list of fantastic midge patterns without listing the venerable zebra midge.

Effective patterns include size 18 to 22 Barr's Pure Midge Larvae, Mercury Midges, Mercury Blood Midges, and Rojo Midges. I fish my larvae as attractors in a conventional, two-fly nymphing rig. A good rule of thumb is to keep your strike indicator adjusted to 11/2 to 2 times the depth of the water — measured from your split-shot or other weight.

This super simple midge larva pattern is a direct result of the insights I gained that day. The fly is really nothing more than a thread body with a fine wire rib, to mimic the segmentation of the natural larvae. Importantly, the fly is tied on a 3x hook to closely match the natural’s proportions.
