Developed by a team of scientists, educators, writers, and designers working closely with NASA missions, ViewSpace videos feature the latest imagery from satellites and space telescopes, and provide unique insight into our understanding of the universe.

This extremely deep exposure captures a small portion of the universe across time and space, revealing a variety of galaxies.

A black hole is a region of space packed with so much mass that its own gravity prevents anything from escaping—even a ray of light. Although we can’t see a black hole, telescopes can observe the material around it.

The light curve shown here is based on Kepler space telescope observations of the star HAT-P-7 and its exoplanet HAT-P-7 b, which was discovered in 2008. Kepler has been used to detect more than 2,300 planets using the transit method.

The Eagle Nebula offers views of a stellar nursery in multiple wavelengths, allowing us to see both the dense cocoons of dust and the stars forming within. The nebula is home to three thick columns of dust and gas where stars are forming, known as the Pillars of Creation.

Although all stars emit light in a variety of wavelengths, those that stand out in one view tell us more about their makeup.

Telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope and the upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will use direct imaging to find out more about planets like these and look for additional planets.
