USS Alaska (CB-1) was commissioned on 17 June 1944. She served in the Pacific, screening aircraft carriers, providing shore bombardment at Okinawa , and going on raiding missions in the East China Sea.

USS Alaska was the lead ship of the Alaska-class "large cruisers" which served with the United States Navy during the end of World War II. She was the first of two ships of her class to be completed, followed only by Guam; four other ships were ordered but were not completed before the end of the war.

The Alaska class large cruiser comes close to being the American battlecruiser. This class included the USS Alaska and the USS Guam. They had a speed of 33 knots, were 808.5 feet long with a displacement of 29,779 tons and had 9-inches of armor belt. Some parties in the navy referred to them as battlecruisers but this was discouraged.

Some believe that the large cruisers, in fact, were battlecruisers; New York Shipbuilding had begun construction on an earlier class of battlecruisers and converted one, USS Saratoga (CV 3) as the first fast carrier in 1927.
