阿富汗是世界最不发达国家之一。历经战乱，经济破坏殆尽，严重依赖外援。阿富汗王国建立于1747年。19世纪后，国力日衰，成为英国和沙俄的角逐场。1919年摆脱英国殖民统治获得独立。1978年，阿富汗人民民主党推翻达乌德政权，成立阿富汗民主共和国。
