On 27-29 March 2024, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, visited Latvia upon the invitation of the Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General Leonīds Kalniņš.

Given that Latvia joined NATO on 29 March 2004, 2024 marks a significant milestone - the twentieth anniversary of Latvia's NATO membership. It is 20 years since Latvia became a member of the world's most powerful military alliance.

20 years ago, on March 29, 2004, Latvia joined the North Atlantic Treaty, becoming a member state of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Latvia, along with Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, was invited to join NATO at the alliance's meeting in Prague in November 2002.

Together with Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds, Admiral Bauer opened a photo exhibition at the Freedom Monument in Riga, portraying 20 years of Latvia’s NATO membership. In his speech, Admiral Bauer praised Latvia for its courageous devotion to freedom.
