The 503rd Infantry Regiment, formerly the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) is an airborne unit in the United States military. It is one of the most decorated units of its kind[citation needed] with a distinguished battlefield record notably in World War II and the Vietnam War.

The Paratrooper Database was created to honor those men who served in the 503rd Parachute Regimental Combat Team during WWII. The 503rd PRCT was created by combining the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 462nd Parachute Field Artillery Battalion and Company C of the 161st Parachute Engineer Company in late August, 1944.

The 503d Parachute Regimental Combat Team, World War II began with the activation of the 503d Parachute Battalion in Fort Benning, Georgia on 21 August 1941. The Battalion was the third of four Parachute Battalions formed prior to the beginning of World War II.

They were the first US airborne regiment to arrive in the Southwest Pacific Area in WWII. The non-commissioned officers (NCOs) and members of the Company participated in jump-master training from 31 May to 24 July 1943, They spot-jumped on White Field, at Gordonvale.

They were the first U.S. parachute unit to be shipped overseas during WWII. Soon after dark on 7 November 1942, the battalion took off from Land's End, England. The thirty-nine C-47's were heading for La Senia, Algeria. The pre-arranged "peace plan" failed. The widely scattered battalion suffered casualties, both KIA's and WIA's.
