Metastatic bowel cancer is cancer that started in either the back passage (rectum) or large bowel (colon) and has spread to another part of the body. It is also called advanced cancer. The symptoms of metastatic bowel cancer can be similar to bowel cancer that hasn't spread. Other symptoms depend on which part of the body the cancer has spread to.

Other people have cancer that has come back and spread after treatment. The symptoms of advanced stomach cancer depend on what part of the body the cancer has spread to. The most common place for stomach cancer to spread is to the liver. It can also spread to the lymph nodes, the tissue that lines the abdominal cavity (peritoneum), and the lungs.

This type of pain can be worse when you open your bowels. The pain might come in waves. Constipation or a narrowing of the back passage (anal stricture) can cause pain. Sometimes the pain can be due to a split in the skin of the anus known as a fissure. A fissure causes a very sharp and intense pain when you open your bowels.

The most common symptom if cancer has spread to the bone is bone pain. It is usually there most of the time and wakes you up at night. It can be a dull ache or stabbing pain. Your bones might also become weaker and more likely to break (fracture). Having bone pain does not mean that your cancer has definitely spread to the bones.
