However, to some extent Alco continued to catalog custom models when a universal design would have sufficed, such as what EMD and General Electric had been doing for years.

The ALCO Century 420 is a four-axle, 2,000 horsepower (1,491 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company. 131 were built between June 1963 and August 1968. Cataloged as a part of ALCO's "Century" line of locomotives, the C420 was intended to replace the earlier RS-32 model.

One of a kind C420 #410, with notches in the nose like an RS series loco. As a result of an accident, 410 was fitted with a cut down high nose, supplied by the then sister road Norfolk & Western, when the D&H was under Dereco control.

The Alco "Century" 420 with 2.000 HP had as power plant a 12 Cy V aligned cylinder at 45° 4 stroke, which gave it a top speed of over 110 km/h. At full load the Loco weighed in at 109 t and its fuel tanks held over 750 litres of fuel.

ALCo built a total of 131 Century 420 locomotives between 1963 and 1969, when the builder ceased all new locomotive production. Powered by a 12-cylinder, turbocharged, 2,000-hp 251-series prime mover, the C420’s direct competitor in 1963 was the EMD GP18.

Originally built in 1963 as L&HR 21 and later modified in 1966 by ALCo, the unit was one of only six out of nine L&HR C-420's to find their way onto the Conrail roster in 1976. Here we see the 2072 with its original L&HR scheme painted out and renumbered for Conrail.
