The fault here rests with Apple not being progressive with display technology and pitching two solutions that have depreciated with time for their worth. Both need modern updates.

I only have the options that I would have for a non Apple Studio Display. I use a Mac Studio M1 Max but also tried to connect a MacBook Air laptop to the Studio Display and it had the same problem.

I have tried on 2015 (Thunderbolt 2) and 2017 (Thunderbolt 3 with adapter); and the Thunderbolt display would work - however, the resolution is NOT 5K, unlike my 2015/2017 iMac.
