But regardless of a hundred years of breeding, betta fish are still evolved to live in a particular habitat, with other particular flora and fauna. Maybe this changes when we breed them. But, for example, they are still tropical fish and prefer warmer temperatures.

Bettas live in rice paddies and blackwater pools in SE Asia. I've done some reasearch and most of the sources say Betta originate from the large river system in Thailand and Cambodia, from which lakes of variable sizes form. You might make a point though, the concern I have about the idea is the adaptability of my betta in the natural habitat.

I know it's a blackwater habitat, and would like to follow that. I'm planning for a few smaller tanks to pull this off in, I'd like to try it in my 5.5 at first.
