Camelford is a pretty market town, ideally placed to explore the peaceful moors and the beautiful rugged coastline. It is easily accessible from the A30 (follow North Cornwall, Camelford sign) and straddles the A39.

The name Camelford comes from the obvious ford across the Camel, in Kernewek Reskammel, and has been known as that with various spelling differences since the 13th century. The origins based on the River Allan, or prior to an Ordnance Survey error in 1888, River Layne with the Cornish for bent or crooked Kamm.

Camelford received its borough charter, markets and fair in the 1200s but remained a small market town. By the 1700s it was a stopping point for coaches on the Launceston-Bodmin road, as several buildings – former hostelries – attest.
