The story is narrated by Mello, a character from the manga. It recounts the time the detective L worked with FBI agent Naomi Misora to stop a violent serial killer in the United States. The murderer calls himself "Beyond Birthday", or BB.

Beyond Birthday (in Japanese: ビヨンド=バースデイ, Biyondo Bāsudei), also reffered to by his false name Rue Ryūzaki is the main antagonist of the 2006 light novel prequel to Death Note, Death Note - Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases.

Beyond Birthday is one of L's early successors from Wammy's House. He is turned against L by the suicide of another successor, A, and is motivated to create a case that L cannot solve in order to prove his superiority.
