Escherichia coli biofilm consists of a bacterial colony embedded in a matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) which protects the microbes from adverse environmental conditions and results in infection.

To develop new strategies against biofilms, it is important to know the mechanisms involved in their formation. In this review, the different steps of biofilm formation in E. coli, the mechanisms of tolerance to antimicrobials and new compounds and strategies to combat biofilms are discussed.

On the other hand, antimicrobial evaluations revealed that even at low concentrations (1 ppm), the AgNPs in the biofilms effectively inhibit the growth of S. aureus , with inhibition halos observable from 1 to 100 ppm samples.
