15,000 mile fuel injector cleaner that some quick lube places hook up to your car and run through the system with some sort of hose? More low cost/high profit/little benefit "maintenence" voodoo? or truly beneficial. Even my Chevy dealer did this---At the 10,ooo mile service [for 59.95]!!!

Gunk fuel injector cleaner by Solder Seal is inexpensive and may well be one of the most effective at cleaning away deposits. If you've ever had an engine with "preignition" problems and you've noted the pinging reduce or disappear after using injector cleaners, it is hard to not consider those products as worthwhile.

A good way to check out the pump, pickup filter and inline filter is to measure fuel delivery volume. Relieve system pressure, then disconnect the fuel supply line at the fuel filter or fuel rail, or disconnect the return hose from the rail. Place the open end of the fuel hose in a measuring cup or graduated cylinder.

A.Fisch, the Avalon has a "pressurized" fuel system. Opening the gas cap will NOT relieve the pressure. Disconnecting the fuel line will dump a lot of fuel, much like opening the nozzle on a hose that has already been shut off, there is fuel under pressure in the lines. Disconnecting the PUMP does not relieve the pressure.

The fuel injector cleaner I am thinking about using is STP Super Concentrated Fuel Injector Cleaner. Normally it is about $5.00 a bottle. The Wholesale Club sells it in a four pack for less than $8.00.

Another reason to run an upper cylinder lubricant / cleaner in the fuel on a regular basis. Fuel system components (carbs, fuel injectors and pumps), need lubrication along with the valve guides and rings. In addition, the tips of the fuel injectors need to be kept clean. Any "baked on deposits" will alter the spray pattern on the injector.

If all ignition checks good, It's like;y the spider injector assembly inside the intake at fault, while cleaners do clean metal injectors well in most cases, most have a hard time softening 200k mile fuel lined brittle plastic.

The problems are worse on hot days, esp. when the car has been sitting in the sun. I don't really notice any symptoms when the engine is cold. I thought that using fuel injector cleaner lessened the problem, but I could be over-optimistic. The check engine light seems more apt to come on when I use the A/C.
