Base deficit | Student Doctor Network
2004年3月2日 · The BD can be used to calculate the whole body base deficit in the same way you would calculate the amount of sodium to replete in hyponatremia and is used to calculate how much bicarbonate to give the patient. Bicarbonate should be given when adequate ventilation is assured. Generally, it is used to correct the pH up to 7.1 and take it from there.
Base Excess/Deficit As Surrogate For Fluid Status
2011年6月9日 · Most patients who are in hypovolemic shock or distributive shock will be acidotic with a base deficit, but not all acidotic patients are acidotic because of hypovolemia. You can develop hyperchloremic acidosis after a big NACL load. You can calculate amps of bicarb a patient is short: weight in kilos x 2/3 x base deficit = MEQ of HCO3 short.

If there is a positive BE (greater than +2) then this indicates that there has been a gain of a base or loss of acid due to non respiratory causes. However if there has been a negative base excess (less than -2) then there has been a loss of base or a gain of acid from non respiratory causes.
