Although a believer in the power of reason, science, and the arts, Rousseau was convinced that a flourishing culture hid a society full of inequalities and injustices.

His first major work, the Discourse on the Arts and Sciences (1750), argued that man is good by nature but has been corrupted by society and civilization; Rousseau’s belief in the natural goodness of man set him apart from Roman Catholic writers who, like him, were hostile to the idea of progress.

Rousseau’s most powerful and recognized work was “The Social Contract”, which put emphasis on the difficulties of freedom and authority. He strongly believed in the requirement for individuals to be able to express themselves while giving thought to the community being well kept.
