Tropomyosin: A protein involved in skeletal muscle contraction and that wraps around actin and prevents myosin from grabbing it. I-band: The area adjacent to the Z-line, where actin is not superimposed by myosin. A-band: The length of a myosin within a sarcomere. M-line: The line at the center of a sarcomere to which myosin bind.

The sliding filament theory of muscle contraction was developed to fit the differences observed in the named bands on the sarcomere at different degrees of muscle contraction and relaxation. The mechanism of contraction is the binding of myosin to actin, forming cross-bridges that generate filament movement.

A series of bands—ordered half I-band, A-band, half I-band, which display differential light-optical and electron-optical properties based on their structural components—reside between the Z-lines (which bisect the continuous I-bands).
