PFAS are a family of man-made chemicals that contain carbon, fluorine, and other elements. The family tree image below, Figure 1, shows some of the different families of PFAS. For simplicity, it does not include all PFAS subfamilies. Follow along – starting at the “fallen apple” of PFC and then continuing up the tree trunk into the branches.

This variety of PFAS with diverse properties is organized in the form of a PFAS family tree that includes two primary classes: polymers and nonpolymers. Each class may contain many subclasses, groups, and subgroups, some of which are shown in the figure.
FASAs biodegrade to PFSAs, with the potential to degrade to PFSAs and PFCAs in the atmosphere – see Figure 2-11. The family tree is based on the PFAS definition provided in Buck et al. 2011[156] and OECD 2021[2318] .

The PFAS Family Tree 1. PFAS are fluorinated molecules that are widely used in industry and in diverse products and processes. Examples include water-repelling textiles, grease-resistant paper, nonstick packaging and cooking appliances, medical and laboratory tubing, aqueous film-forming foams, and industrial detergents.
