That said, emoji get used in numerous different ways, and sometimes specific groups or communities even have their own unique usage. It's hard to pin down exactly what an entire group of people mean when they use an emoji. Sometimes the difference in how the emoji is displayed on a device makes a big difference too.

It's like you are trying to brush it off or look cute. It's morphed and carried over into almost humble bragging because of that. It also has developed a meaning of saying something shady and then using the emoji as if to say "but that's not my business, don't mind me"...passive aggressive in a funny way. Just a thing.

The former would've been kind of a K Records/Beat Happening thing to do. Those guys famously had tea parties instead of ragers and wrote songs about candy and hugs and taking naps, etc, showed up to open for leather-and-studs punk bands in cardigans and slacks, etc. because they were much too cool and offbeat to be regular punks.
