Somalia counts about 3.1 million persons of concern to UNHCR, including over 30,000 refugees and asylum seekers, mainly from Ethiopia and Yemen. Over 92,000 refugees have voluntarily returned to Somalia with UNHCR assistance, the majority coming back from Kenya, Yemen, Djibouti, Libya, Sudan and Eritrea.

Although the intensity of the crisis has fluctuated over time, refugees continue to flee Somalia because of the combined forces of violence and natural disasters. Oct 7, 2021 · Somalia hosts some 3.86 million persons of concern to UNHCR, including over 39,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, mainly from Ethiopia and Yemen. Approximately 9,000 refugees have voluntarily returned (Jan 2020 - December 2023) to Somalia with UNHCR assistance, the majority coming back from Yemen, Kenya, Djibouti, and Libya.

A total of 35,672 refugees and asylum seekers mainly Yemenis and Ethiopians were hosted in Somalia across the three regions of Somaliland, Puntland and South central.

Around 13.2% of the Somali national population have become refugees and asylum seekers who have sought protection elsewhere through outward migration. In fact, in 2016 it was estimated that 1.1 million Somali refugees and 0.5 million Somali asylum seekers were displaced worldwide, the majority in the Horn of Africa and Yemen.

Jun 1, 2016 · Almost two-thirds of the global Somali diaspora live in neighboring countries. At nearly half a million, Kenya hosts the largest number of Somali migrants (both refugees and nonrefugees) of any other country, according to UN estimates. Not far behind is Ethiopia with 440,000 Somali migrants.
