Somalia counts about 3.1 million persons of concern to UNHCR, including over 30,000 refugees and asylum seekers, mainly from Ethiopia and Yemen. Over 92,000 refugees have voluntarily returned to Somalia with UNHCR assistance, the majority coming back from Kenya, Yemen, Djibouti, Libya, Sudan and Eritrea.
Although the intensity of the crisis has fluctuated over time, refugees continue to flee Somalia because of the combined forces of violence and natural disasters. Approximately 9,000 refugees have voluntarily returned (Jan 2020 - December 2023) to Somalia with UNHCR assistance, the majority coming back from Yemen, Kenya, Djibouti, and Libya.
