In this two-part article, we’ll give you the scoop on our collaborative project to level up our Spotify Design brand. We’ll explain what we did and why we did it, plus tell you what we learned about wrangling stakeholders and embracing color in the age of dark themes.

Our 2013-14 “Paint it black” redesign. Then in 2014-2015, the Brand and Creative team refreshed Spotify’s brand identity in a major way. We had a new color palette, a new typeface (Circular), and lots of visual updates that needed to be integrated into our apps.

The redesign of 2013 has modernized the Spotify logo, keeping it recognizable. It was the same shade of green, used in the previous version, but the color palette got extended to green, white and black, where black was for the wordmark, set in a modern geometric serif font on the right from a minimalistic emblem.
