2.1 Subcutaneous hydration (previously known as hypodermoclysis) is a technique used for the subcutaneous administration of large volumes of fluids and electrolytes in order to achieve fluid maintenance or replacement.

Subcutaneous fluids should be used with caution where there is a history of cardiac and or renal failure and bleeding disorder in patients who have existing fluid overload. Consideration for administration should be symptom led but blood tests for urea and electrolytes will be done to confirm appropriateness. Contra-indications

Subcutaneous infusion is defined as the delivery of fluids or medication into the subcutaneous space for absorption into the circulation via “perfusion, diffusion, balance between hydrostatic/osmotic pressure and lymphatic drainage” (, p.118).

The fluids can be warmed for 5-10 minutes in a bowl of warm water before being given, as this helps to reduce irritation for your cat. Close and attach the giving set (drip tubing) to the bag of fluids, half-fill the chamber with fluid, and then open the pinch clamp to allow a slow flow of fluids through the drip tubing until there’s no air left in the tubing.
