Triceratops (/ traɪˈsɛrətɒps / try-SERR-ə-tops; [1] lit. 'three-horned face') is a genus of chasmosaurine ceratopsian dinosaur that lived during the late Maastrichtian age of the Late Cretaceous period, about 68 to 66 million years ago in what is now western North America.

There’s actually two different species of Triceratops known, with one occurring slightly after the other. The first to be described was Triceratops horridus, which may have directly evolved into the slightly younger Triceratops prorsus.

Within the Triceratops genus, two distinct species have been identified: Triceratops horridus and Triceratops prorsus. The former is known for its more robust brow horns, while the latter has slightly longer nose horns.
