The more I think about it, the more I love that the mom's red panda ended up becoming a Tamagotchi. I like to interpret it as, despite her choosing to once again repress her emotions and her true self, she still ended up with a healthy outlet, an escape, a hobby that allows her to be in contact with her true self.

If Turning Red was a little less "real" and more like, say, Ruby Gilman (which, as far as I can tell, leans more into the fantasy element and doesn't have any references to puberty or periods), I think it would have just been discarded as being too bland or milquetoast, or unrealistic in its portrayal of middle school aged kids.

In Turning Red (2022), when Meilin gets surprised while in her red panda form, she instinctively raises her paws above her head. This is a real life behaviour of the red panda, in response to threats.
