During the mid-20th century, the population of Northern White Rhinos began to decline rapidly due to increased poaching. The demand for rhino horns, driven by their supposed medicinal properties and status symbols in some cultures, led to widespread illegal hunting.

The northern white rhinoceros or northern square-lipped rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) is considered critically endangered and possibly extinct in the wild. Formerly found in several countries in East and Central Africa south of the Sahara , this subspecies is a grazer in grasslands and savanna woodlands.

Southern white rhinos were thought to be extinct in the late 19th century, but in 1895 a small population of fewer than 100 individuals was discovered in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa.
