The motivating reason given in the book is that routed ports on a switch are often used between the Distribution and Core switches. Alas, the book does not provide any benefits of doing this. After a little thinking I see that it limits the topological reach of a VLAN and hence STP instance -- is this the main reason for using L3 links in the Core?
