2020年9月7日 · Here, we present a systematic in situ Li elemental and isotopic study of six slightly altered abyssal peridotites from the ultra-slow spreading Gakkel Ridge and Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR). Our study demonstrates a negative correlation between Li content and δ 7 Li value in olivine, Cpx and Opx of the studied abyssal peridotites.

These rocks can contain up to 30% trapped melt, contrasting sharply with the typical abyssal peridotite which contains virtually none. Basalts erupted along these ridges provide a classic case of trace- and major-element decoupling during magma genesis.

Abyssal peridotites are ultramafic rocks collected from mid-ocean ridges that are the residues of adiabatic decompression melting. Their compositions provide information on the degree of melting and melt-rock interaction involved in the formation of oceanic lithosphere, as well as providing constraints on pre-existing mantle heterogeneities.

Although abyssal peridotites are serpentinized, and have also experienced seafloor weathering, magmatic signatures remain well preserved in the bulk-rock compositions.
