If you're short on time, keep it simple: maybe a small tree or a few shrubs and some mulch to keep the weeds under control. If you have a little more time, add some perennial plants (the ones which come back each year). Make sure when you plant shrubs and trees that you are leaving enough space. If it looks too empty and you can't stand it, go ahead and plant a few perennials you can easily move later. Or plant annuals until things grow in. Moving shrubs when they get big can be hard work.
